Mesquite Schools Declare "No Fry" Zone
MESQUITE (CBS 11 News) ―
Family dinners are a must at the Welle household in Mesquite.
"We make sure that the kids eat healthy. For dinner we make it a point to eat together as a family. So it's basically a priority for us," said Rosario Welle.
She insists on her family eating healthy. Now the Mesquite mother of two finds comfort in knowing that the food her children eat at school is going out of the fryer and into the oven.
"My parents will feel a lot better, because they will know that not only am I eating well at home, but I'm also eating a good lunch at school," said Sarah Welle, a Mesquite High School student.
The Mesquite Independent School District is saying goodbye to fried food. Every deep fryer in every Mesquite school cafeteria has been removed and replaced with new high-tech ovens.
"The reason we decided to go with this particular oven is because it has a browning technique that is similar to the frying," said Bette Mogg, Food and Nutrition M.I.S.D.
The district says its goal is to provide healthier options to its students without increasing the price of breakfast and lunch. Other local school districts are taking the same steps, but some are passing the costs onto the parents.
Several school districts in North Texas have already pulled deep fryers from their cafeterias. State policy mandates that all Texas public schools must remove their deep fryers by the spring of 2010.
