Power Out In Palestine, But Total Damage Light

PALESTINE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― "There was a surge of wind and it just came tumbling down"

James May lives in Palestine.  He watched his neighbor's oak tree and house fall victim to Hurricane Ike.

"I couldn't believe that something this huge had come down that quick," he said.  "It was mind blowing."

About 6,800 people in Palestine are without power.  Across east Texas, including Palestine, the number is 100,000.  Factor in the Gulf Coast, and the number jumps to 3 million.

Oncor, based in Dallas, provides electricity to North and East Texas.  The company says some outages could last for several days depending on the damage.

Brenda Sitka heard the trouble next door to her Palestine house.  "I looked out and about that time it went crack," she said," so it was pretty scary."

The storm's strong winds blew down a large tree and parked it in the middle of her street.

"I'm just lucky as heck it didn't hit my house or hut or barn or any of that," she said.  "That's the beauty of it"

People like May and Sitka who live in Anderson County know they got lucky.  Despite the power outages and downed trees, no injuries have been reported and the overall damage is minimal.
