Reports: Palo Pinto Grass Fire Caused By Lightning

PALO PINTO (CBS 11 News) ― Firefighters in Palo Pinto County say they have gained the upper hand on a lightning caused wildfire near Possum Kingdom Lake.

The fire started right before 3 p.m. Saturday.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday over 2,400 acres were burned.

The Texas Forest Service says the fire is fifty percent contained, but officials say the extreme heat and dry conditions are making it a tough job.  On Sunday fire crews used controlled burns to surround the fire.

The fire threatened 5 oil and gas wells nearby, but no other structures have been lost.

The Texas Forest Service is working four other major grass fires across the state. A total of 114 Texas counties, including Tarrant, Johnson and Ellis Counties are currently under a burn ban.
