More Owners Cutting Back On Pet Care To Save Money

Arezow Doost
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― As tough times take their toll on families across North Texas, many are cutting back wherever they can. In some cases, that includes pet care.

Some animal clinics are seeing more pet owners giving up their pets. Others are skipping check-ups, vaccines and cutting back on medications to save some money.

"Our pet care is not the place to save," said Dr. Jed Ford with Family Pet Clinic. "The preventive health care for pets can go a long way to prevent more expensive things down the road."

Other pet owners like Brenda West would rather find savings somewhere else. "She is our daughter," she said about her dog.

Her dog's recent check up cost her a few hundred dollars. "It's still expensive, but she is a family member so we don't skimp."

Veterinarians say in many cases, pet owners can talk to them about ways to save money on vaccinations and even medicines.
