Dogs Maul 8-Year-Old, Grandma In Kaufman County
Dogs Face 10 Days Of Isolation
KAUFMAN COUNTY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A Good Samaritan jumped in and saved a girl and her grandmother Monday night and the pair remains in the hospital this morning.
The mauling occurred in the 10400 block of FM 740 and Interstate 20, in a newly-annexed area of Mesquite.
According to reports, the girl was playing in a fenced in area where the dogs were when the attack happened.
The 54-year-old woman jumped in when she saw the dogs bite the girl, officials said.
The girl's mother called 911 about 3 p.m. and Forney and Mesquite police both responded since the location is in northwest Kaufman County.
Animal control officers and EMS personnel saw the elder woman try to free the girl.
Both were injured. The woman was taken to Parkland Hospital by ground ambulance; the girl was Children's Hospital by helicopter. Authorities said the girl suffered multiple injuries, including a puncture wound to her chest, right arm and leg.
A 25-year-old man, who happened to be walking by, jumped in and pushed the dogs away. Authorities say the man saved the girl and her grandmother from more serious injuries.
"So I think you can safely say it [the Good Samaritan's actions] certainly helped to minimize any of the injuries that they received," said Lt. Bill Hedgpeth with the Mesquite Police Department.
After about three hours, the animals were captured. They will be held in by the Animal Control of Mesquite for 10 days, as is the standard policy in all animal attacks.
If Mesquite officials determine the animals are aggressive and dangerous they could be euthanized.
