Money Problems Could Delay Children's Center
PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A tough economy threatens to delay the opening of a new children's center in Collin County. It's designed to keep families with younger children together when Child Protective Services intervenes.
The center is called "My Friend's House," and having gotten just this far is a small miracle. Envisioned in 2001, ground wasn't broken until 2008.
Last year a storm leveled it.
Now a month away from opening, it has another challenge. Backers must come up with $395,000 by May or miss a state licensing deadline.
The tragedy is that there is no place for children younger than ten in the Collin County placement system.
For kids ten and older there is the teen shelter, where brothers and sisters can stay together.
My Friend's House is modeled after it, but for younger kids. And it could keep all the children in one family under the same roof -- and not scattered.
It's hoped numerous fund raisers, like a recent garage sale sponsored by a local school, will close the gap.
