Report: Mom Who Hurt Child May Have Mental Illness
PLANO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A Plano mother arrested on charges of injuring her child remains in jail on a $1 million bond.
Court documents released late Thursday state 37-year-old Padmaja Enjeti intentionally dropped her baby girl on her head from a stair well balcony.
The mother called 911 after she allegedly dropped the child. The woman told someone she then went downstairs, grabbed her child and went back upstairs to allegedly drop her a second time.
The documents also state the mother was angry and upset. She may have also had a history of mental illness.
Her husband said she had been suffering from hallucinations and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
"Based on the mother's attempt to kill the child, the mental illness of the mother
it is the agency's opinion that the children will be in immediate danger," stated a document written by Child Protective Services.
Her attorney said Enjeti was not mentally responsible for her actions and is asking the judge reduce her bond to $100,000.
"She has severe mental illness. She needs help," said attorney Todd Shapiro. "She needs to get out of jail and go see people who can help her get better. Where she is right now is not helping her. It's not helping the kids. It's not helping her family."
The 21-month-old girl is expected to survive her injuries, which included a fractured skull, the attorney said. The child and an older sibling are in CPS custody.
