Fort Worth Police Arrest Suspect After Chase
HALTOM CITY (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A wild chase that started in Arlington ended in Haltom City just before 6 p.m.
Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Martin Beltran. Police say after the chase e fled on foot, evading police for a few minutes. Beltran was eventually found inside a house in Haltom City and arrested.
The chase started around 5:30 p.m. Thursday when a Fort Worth police officer saw a maroon Dodge pick up truck going 89 miles per hour in a 60 mile per hour zone.
When the officer tried to stop Beltran, he allegedly took off and officers followed in pursuit. At times, police say he drove up to 100 miles per hour.
Police say Beltran was on a cell phone for about 20 minutes during the chase. They believe he was talking to his girlfriend, who lives at the house where he was found.
The hour-long chase wound through Fort Worth, Arlington and Haltom City before it ended in a crash on Higgins Lane in Haltom City.
Police say Beltran then ditched the truck, ran in and out of a house on Higgins Lane. In a press release, Fort Worth police stated Belton then "pole vaulted over an eight-foot fence and ran into small yellow wood framed house in the 1700 block of Oakwood Street."
Police were initially unable to find him inside either houses. However, a few minutes later, they discovered the suspect in a crawl space under the house. He was pulled out and arrested.
"I talked to him and he indicated the reason he ran was because he's a habitual criminal and he felt like he was going to be put away for a long time. Hopefully we can accommodate him on that," said Fort Worth Police Lieutenant Paul Henderson.
Police also arrested his girl friend, 24-year-old Jennifer Ann Lopez, who allegedly helped hide him. Police say she also had outstanding warrants.
Beltran faces charges of evading arrest using a vehicle and aggravated assault of a public servant using a vehicle. Police say he tried to run over an officer who were trying to deploy stop sticks during the chase.
In the press release, Fort Worth police said Beltran went looking for a crawlspace but found a jail space instead.
