Half Of Polygamist Sect's Kids Now With Parents

SAN ANGELO (AP) ― Child Protective Services says 229 of the roughtly 430 children taken from a polygamous commune two months ago have been returned to their parents.

State child welfare officials removed the children from the group's West Texas ranch two months ago. That was after a report that underage girls were being forced into marriages and sex with polygamous older men.

State District Judge Barbara Walther was complying with a state Supreme Court ruling that the seizures was unjustified.

An elder with the polygamous group says it'll probably be two more days before about 430 children are returned to their parents.

Willie Jessop is an elder with the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He says two days will be needed for parents to collect their children because so many parents are showing up at foster facilities simultaneously.

Jessop said yesterday that the sect will allow future marriages only of members who are of legal age.
