Retired DPD Cop Helps Arrest Alleged Robber

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― David Rodriguez thought his days of fighting crime were over.

The 60-year-old retired Dallas police officer has been in a wheelchair since being shot during a drug raid in 1994.

On Monday, Rodriguez pulled up to a drive-through window at a restaurant and realized something was wrong.

"I reached over to give her the money and she wouldn't take it," he said. "I'm thinking, 'Ok. Something's going on inside.'"

Rodriguez watched a customer, identified by police as Royal Douglas Robinson, rob the restaurant and remove cash from the register. When the robber left, Rodriguez decided to follow him.

"He gets to the front of the cleaners, and that's when he sees that I'm still following, and that's when he takes the gun out of his front waist and points it at me," he said.

Rodriguez continued pursuing Robinson anyway and called police. He said he watched as Robinson attempt to carjack a couple before patrol officers chased him and made the arrest.

Some on the department say he should be given the Certificate of Merit.

"Any arrest makes you feel good, but when you get a good felony arrest, that's what most officers live for," said Rodriguez.

Police arrested Robinson along with another man identified as Harold Dillard and charged them with armed robbery.
