Latest Plastic Surgery Craze: Revision

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― It's the latest craze in the nip and tuck world. Patients are demanding better results from their plastic surgeons and looking for doctors to perform revision plastic surgery.

Experts say it's a backlash against that look of having too much work done.

"It's often done because a patient is not happy with the way the procedure turned out," said Plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Jacono. "Although patients are not disfigured, they don't look irregular, they're just not getting what they expected."

Dr. Jacono said he devotes up to forty percent of his practice to those kinds of cases.

"Often when patients come in for a revision plastic surgery, it is because they feel they got a very unnatural, sculpted, and what I call a cookie-cutter appearance," said Dr. Jacono.

Or, Dr. Jacono said, the original procedure is done too aggressively, like an over pulled face or too much skin removed from the eye area.

"They want to look more beautiful, more enhanced," said Dr. Jacono. "They just don't want to look like they went under the knife."

When the result is not what the patient expects it can lead to anxiety, embarrassment and withdrawal.

"There's a self consciousness that comes up and a sense of not being who they are," said psychotherapist Kathy Kater.

Kater specializes in body image disorders. She said when the changes are unexpected there's an actual grieving process.

"I think that people just don't realize how much just a little change can really change the whole overall picture," said Kater. "When they look in the mirror, they don't look like themselves anymore and that could be very disturbing."

HOW TO FIND A DOCTOR
The death of Kanye West's mother brings to light the importance of researching your surgeon before going under the knife. Her cosmetic surgery was allegedly preformed by a doctor who was facing disciplinary action by the state medical board. 

 Accept no substitutes. Your plastic surgeon has to be board certified (American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery).
 Ask a lot of questions. For example, ask how often the doctor performs the procedure. What are the risk factors involved with the procedure? 
  Reputation is important. Search thoroughly, compare different plastic surgeons and talk to their former patients. What is the doctor's success rate with the operation and safety record regarding complications? 
  How do you feel about the surgeon and the office staff? Follow your gut instincts, they will serve you well.
