Controversial Smoking Ban Passes In Richardson

RICHARDSON (CBS 11 News) ― The City of Richardson unanimously passed a controversial ordinance that bans smoking in all workplaces, including restaurants.

After weeks of debate, council members reached a compromise.

TheseĀ are the exceptions to the smoking ban:

- Bars that have 70 percent or more gross revenue from alcohol sales. They'll have to have a separate HVAC system and report to the city every quarter on their sales.

- Bars that have 50-69 percent of gross revenue from alcohol sales would be allowed to have smoking as long as the bar has a completely different enclosed area and a separate entrance. They would have to have a separate HVAC system, and would have to report their sales to the city on a quarterly basis.

- Any establishment that has 90 percent or more sales from tobacco products.

- Patios

The ordinance will go into effect January 1, 2009.
