Governor Rick Perry was in Dallas earlier Thursday and on his way to Denton for a campaign event when he heard about Thursday's shooting at Fort Hood.
At an impromptu press conference in Denton Governor Perry would not go into details about what happened but emphasized the right people are there and taking care of the situation.
Governor Perry says he has been briefed about the shooter and additional suspects, but would not talk about their backgrounds.
When asked whether there may have been a lack of security on post, Perry said "That's a federal response. I think it would be inappropriate for me to make a statement on a federal reservation when that is not our deal. I would be out of line to do such."
Governor Perry has not indicated if he will travel to Fort Hood Thursday evening.
He does say commanders have taken appropriate steps to secure other bases around the state
