Teen Dies When Train Crashes Into Her SUV

RIO VISTA (CBS 11 News) ― A teenager died Sunday afternoon after police say a train struck her car.

It happened on Highway 174, also known as Cleburne/ Whitney Road, at FM 916 in Rio Vista. The community of about 700 is struggling with the fact that they will never see Katelen Baker's smile again.

Investigators say the 15-year-old was trying to drive through the warning railroad arms when an Amtrak passenger train hit her SUV.

"The circumstance of the accident probably indicates that the impact of the death was instant," said Rio Vista Chief of Police Steven Johnson.

Sunday afternoon, friends gathered in a prayer circle several feet away from where she died.

"I was told she was going to get a loaf of bread from the store," said Katelen's friend Laci Morris. "I feel so sorry for her family. How this could happen on Mother's Day?"

Friends say Katelen had just received her hardship driver's license last week. She loved to swim and joke around with her friends.

"I just can't imagine going to school and looking in the class that's she's in and her not being there," said Laci.

A spokesperson for Amtrak said the train was traveling from San Antonio to Chicago. There were 63 passengers on board. None of them were injured.
