Chase With Kaufman Escapee Ends

(CBS 11 News) A Kaufman County escapee is back behind bars after he stole a car and lead authorities on a multi-city chase this morning.

Robert Odell of Navarro County was at Presbyterian Hospital in Kaufman when he escaped from a deputy. According to reports, the 38-year-old was taken hospital for undisclosed reasons when he told the guard he needed to go to the restroom. He attacked the deputy and escaped from custody despite his leg irons.

Odell is a considered a contract prisoner, one who is sent to another county's facility because of overcrowding, said Sgt. Richard Gaddis with the Kaufman County Sheriff's department.

Odell is being held in their jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Officials said Odell stole a car several blocks from the hospital. The multi-county chase ended without incident near Palmer in Ennis County, authorities said.

The deputy received minor injuries.
