Alleged Serial Rapist Faces 3 Felony Charges

Man May Be Connected To At Least 21 North Texas Crimes Since 2005

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

A Dallas County Grand Jury has indicted the man believed to be the serial rapist in nearly two dozen assaults since May 2005.

On Tuesday, Stanley Ledbetter, Jr. was indicted on three charges: aggravated sexual assault with deadly weapon for a June 5, 2005 assault; aggravated robbery with deadly weapon for a June 6, 2005 assault;  and aggravated sexual assault with a deadly weapon for a crime on Nov. 3, 2005.

All are felony cases.

The 30-year-old was arrested on April 7, 2008 and then charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault. His bond was set at $1 million for each count.

Plano police linked Ledbetter to one of the charges through a shotgun he sold to a Plano pawn shop.

In April, detectives noted they had forensic evidence in seven cases that connected Ledbetter to the crimes.

The victims lived in apartment complexes and were often forced at gunpoint to drive to ATMs after being assaulted, according to reports.  Before Ledbetter's arrest, the only information police had was a sketch and a grainy ATM surveillance photo of the suspect.

Police believe he also may be connected to at least 19 other robberies and assaults in Dallas and several other northern suburbs for almost three years.

The investigation went nation-wide and involved a seven-city task force and the FBI.

No court date has been set.
