Fitness Club Charged Monthly Dues After Closing

HIGHLAND VILLAGE (CBS 11 News) ― Snap Fitness in Highland Village closed on September 30 without any warning. But an unknown number of people were debited their October dues at the beginning of the month.

Signs posted on the door from the landlord say Jennifer Six, the club's owner, didn't pay her rent. Her club is one of 1700 Snap Fitness franchises in the U.S. and Canada.

Her attorney, Rich Reister, told us the corporate office locked in debits from members' accounts, even after she told them she was closing and filing for bankruptcy.

But the president of the Snap Fitness corporation, Peter Taunton, told CBS 11 News they didn't know Six was closing her franchise until after members complained it was already shut down.

Taunton says if they had known Six was going to close, they would never have billed members. He says he can't give refunds because they placed the money in her account.

Neither Taunton or members say they have heard back from Six.

Members' can still work out free of charge at other Snap Fitness locations in North Texas through the end of the month. But after that, they'll have to join those clubs.
