Hurst Youth Soccer Game Ends With Violence

HURST (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― When kid's games become parents' fights, police get involved. That's what happened at the Hurst Community Park on Sunday.

It was a heated soccer game, and the tensions spilled over into the parking lot.

While parents were arguing in the parking lot, one man let loose on women by allegedly assaulting them with his elbows.

Renee Cantrell lives down the street from the park and frequents the soccer field. Cantrell says she's upset by the violence. "It should be fun for the children, [the violence is] way too much," she said.

According to witnesses, what started out as a peaceful youth soccer game -- turned into an assault. According to police, a 27-year-old man attacked two women after the game.

It's the second report of assault at a soccer match in Tarrant County, in as many weeks.

"I was here yesterday, I saw the game," Debbie said in a state of disapproval. Debbie, who didn't want her last name used, commented with her one year old grandson, Jamie, at her side. "It's terrible, terrible. Right Jamie? The kids gotta teach grownups, not to fight."

Violence in soccer continues in the national spotlight. During a college matchup a New Mexico player is seen kicking, pushing and yanking the ponytail of an opponent. Video of that offense, along with that of a Rhode Island high school soccer brawl, is capturing national and now local frowns.

Lonny McGrew, who also lives near the Hurst soccer field, is taken aback by the video. "I hadn't seen females acting like that in a long time," he said laughing. "She [the soccer player] shouldn't be doing that, either kicked out of school, or her scholarship taken away from her." The New Mexico player was suspended.

While police say the North Texas women attacked in the parking lot weren't seriously injured, people there say violent actions at family events are dangerous in more ways than one. When these things happen, kids like Mitchell Alvarez are watching. "It's just a game. It should be about fun," the little boy said.

Parents in Hurst say they've seen tensions escalate, but plan to be on guard and to try to calm spats if possible, or call police if the kicks are on more than just soccer balls.

Renee Cantrell says someone should step up and be a 'true adult'. "I certainly want to intervene and tell them to calm down, and remember where they're at."

The man, who allegedly assaulted the two women, has been charged with simple assault. The women who were attacked received only minor injuries.
