Sonya Sotomayor's historic oath into the Supreme Court is viewed as a major milestone for many in the Hispanic community. Many believe Sotomayor will help pave the way for a new generation of future female leaders.
With the sound of traditional mariachi music blaring in the background, a group of young girls proudly dance. It's the beauty and the vibrance captured in movement that embraces a distinctive ethnicity.
"Since we danced these steps, they represent our culture," nine year old dancer Anna Christina said.
For the group of Foklorico dancers, culture is more than just a performance, it is rooted in their identities and is the foundation of what they want to become.
"I'm just happy to be Hispanic, and happy for my culture, for who I am," Roxanna Trejo said of her performance.
A culture that celebrates the significant strides of one of their own. Newly sworn-in justice, Sotomayor, is taking the lead, as the first Hispanic female to serve in the Supreme Court's 220-year history. Positive steps these dancers want to follow.
"All Hispanic females have a chance to do whatever they want," Trejo said.
"That's amazing. It's really amazing," agreed Christina.
At six years old, Miranda Lopez, the youngest in the dance troop, knows her future possibilities are as endless as the sky.
"I'm gonna go to the moon!," Lopez said of her life's ambition. "Because I've never been there before and I really wanna go to the moon."
An historic event, one that will perhaps define a new generation of Hispanic females, like those in the dance troop, to inspire them to accomplish their dreams.
"I want to be a pediatrician."
"I want to be a veterinarian"
"I'm gonna be a space girl!"
