Attendance Lags In First Week Of State Fair
DALLAS (AP) ―
Attendance and sales are down at this year's State Fair of Texas in Dallas, which opened last weekend.
Vendors of everything from hot tubs to stuffed jalapeno cookers are reporting up to an 80-percent drop in sales.
Plummeting stocks and the uncertain economy might cause some fairgoers to clutch their pocketbooks tighter.
But State Fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding blames lousy sales on the lack of football games.
Last Saturday was the first time in five years when there wasn't a game during opening weekend of the State Fair.
This Saturday, Prairie View A&M and Grambling State play in the Cotton Bowl.
Oklahoma and Texas face off in their annual big game on October 11th.
Texas A&M Commerce will play East Central University of Ada, Oklahoma, on Oct. 18th.
The State Fair of Texas runs through October 19th.
