Should Texas Continue HS Steroid Testing?

AUSTIN (AP) ― Texas lawmakers have a decision to make -- scrap the nation's largest high school steroids program, or keep chuggin' along.

The program costs Texas $6 million a year, tests thousands of student-athletes and has only yielded four positive test results in two years.

High school athletes in all sports have been randomly selected for testing.

Critics say the two-year program is a waste of time and money.

But Rep. Dan Flynn says the program is an incredible success. He says the point of testing was to deter against steroid use -- not catch teens using drugs.

High schools are also worried the state could push the cost of testing on them.

The program costs the state $6 million -- less than one percent of its $167 billion budget.

The 2009 legislative session starts Tuesday.
