Brooks Vickery and Spencer Abrams seem like any other students, but history is about to change that.
"A lot of kids don't get this experience," said Brooks. "I'm very excited to be a part of it."
The two eighth graders from Lakehill Preparatory School in northeast Dallas received a very special invitation to attend the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama on Jan. 20.
"I think about how historical it's going to be and how excited I am," said Spencer. "Few chances like this come in a lifetime."
Their incredible journey started at Lakehill in 2007 when two separate teachers nominated both students to attend a prestigious national conference.
Brooks and Spencer spent six days in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia at the Junior National Young Leader's Conference. From that 2007 conference, the two were invited as a select few from around the nation to attend the Junior Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference.
They will spend four days in Washington where they will witness President-elect Obama take the oath of office. They will also be on hand for the inaugural parade and will attend the gala inaugural ball.
Parents of both students say they could not be more proud and perhaps a bit envious.
"They're excited for me," said Brooks. "They always ask if they can go with me and I say, 'Sorry. I'm the only one invited.'"
Seventh-grade student Emily Zagorski from Plano's Renner Middle School has also been invited to the inauguration.
