Website Giving Woman A Chance To Make Others Safe

OAK POINT (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A North Texas woman has been on a mission ever since her sister was murdered more than eight years ago.  She's developed a new website she believes could save your life.

Just how well do you know your handyman and whether he or she has a criminal background?

Homeowner David Cathey, who has a six year old daughter, admits he never thought about it before.  "You just assume that you're working with a group or agency that you're not going to be in a dangerous situation."

Oak Point resident Lucia Bone has thought about it many times.  In 2001, an air conditioning repairman who was a twice convicted sex offender, raped and murdered her sister, sue weaver, and set her house on fire.   "There isn't a day that goes by that i don't remember her and think about her."

So bone created the website sueweavercause.org.

The site has professional background screeners verify that a company's employees, contractors and sub-contractors who enter a home have passed an extensive criminal background check.  "It's going to take consumers driving it, it's going to take businesses understanding the importance of it."

Bone hopes she certifies numerous businesses in communities all across the U.S., and that ultimately her goal is for her idea to become federal law.

She has already certified two companies' employees in Florida and California, and the "Mr. Handyman" franchise in southwest Denton and north Tarrant Counties is the first North Texas company approved by the website.

The owner, Michael Riley says it's very important to him and his customers. "They have to have the confidence that whoever's in their house who's not only going to give them a professional job, but that's had a background check."

Bone says there are other North Texas companies applying for certification.  She believes her website would have saved her sister's life.  "I'm not doing anything for my sister she wouldn't have done for me."
