Search Continues For Mesquite Teen Lost In Flood
MESQUITE (CBS 11 News/AP) ―
Rescuers are attempting to recover the body of a 14-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters caused by the severe storms that pounded North Texas on Tuesday.
Emergency crews performed a risky search Tuesday night inside a drainage tunnel.
Joel Wilson, 15, said he and his best friend Shawn Herbert, 14, were looking for a short cut home when Shawn slipped into a Mesquite creek in the area of Interstate 635 and Burton Road.
"He was into the water up to his waist," said Leah Peters. She saw the teens walking into the creek and called 911 out of concern for their safety.
Joel said he attempted to pull Shawn back to shore with an umbrella, but Shawn was swept away by high water. Wilson was able to swim to safety.
"It's the second day of Spring Break, man," said Tristan Boudreaux, the missing teen's brother. "He was just going to a friend's house to play PlayStation."
About 50 people -- including search dogs and a Department of Public Safety helicopter -- joined the recovery efforts Wednesday for Shawn along a half mile section of a creek. Although water had receded some, brush and debris posed difficulties, said Mark Noble, a spokesman for the Mesquite Fire Department.
Balch Springs emergency workers and concerned citizens are helping Mesquite firefighters with the search and recovery effort.
Tuesday night, as the water slowly receded, firefighters were able to enter the tunnels with flashlights, but found no sign of the boy.
