2 Die When Houston TV Station Helicopter Crashes

Pilot John Downhower and Photographer Dave Garrett Killed

HOUSTON (AP) ― A pilot and television cameraman died Monday when their helicopter crashed on its way to cover a story.

KTRK, an affiliate of ABC, reported Monday that the two were on their way to a shooting scene in Montgomery County, north of Houston, when the news station's helicopter crashed in a forested area.

Preliminary information indicates the helicopter is SkyEyeHD 13. Authorities have confirmed the victims as pilot John Downhower and photographer Dave Garrett.

Communications between the chopper and the TV station stopped right at the time of the crash.

Local stations showed video of burning trees and a pile of debris made up of pieces of the helicopter. The station's logo was partially visible on one piece.

Lt. Dan Norris, a spokesman for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, confirmed to CNN that the helicopter did belong to the TV station and that the two occupants were killed.

Norris did not immediately returned a call from The Associated Press.

"All of us at KTRK-TV are deeply saddened by the tragic accident involving SkyEye 13 and our hearts go out to the families of the pilot and the photographer," station spokesman Tom Ash said in a written statement.
