Glitch Delays Paychecks For Texas National Guard
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A glitch in the Texas National Guard's accounting system has delayed hundreds of checks to military families.
The Winkler family is one of hundreds who are dealing with the mix up. They've missed two paychecks, and they said they have had to resort to handouts just to make ends meet.
Schawn Winkler's said her faith in the military has made her husband's deployment bearable. But lately she says her faith is slowly disappearing.
"We have not been able to pay anything," she said. "I couldn't even buy toilette paper or milk for my kids," she said.
Schawn's husband Terry Winkler is training in Oklahoma. He's expected to be deployed to Iraq in the next few months.
"This is has been very hard," said Cindy Dillon, Schawn's mother. "I'm angry with the army. I'm angry with the military for putting them through this."
Even friends have stepped in to help fill her pantry. They have even paid a few of their bills. "We should not be going through this in the first place," Schawn said.
A spokesperson with the Texas National Guard said the software problem which caused this glitch has been fixed. The Winkler's should expect a deposit between now and Friday.
"He's going over there serving his country... He's going to do that but yet they can't keep on top of the paychecks to take care of the families," Schawn said.
The Winkler's have been told until everything is fully restored they'll only be getting a partial payment. They have applied for emergency funds, but that hasn't come through.
