'Texas 7' Member Volunteering To Die
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Michael Rodriguez will be executed Thursday for his role in the murder of an Irving police officer. Rodriguez will be the first of the so-called 'Texas 7' to die by lethal injection.
For six weeks, they were the most wanted fugitives in America. Seven inmates pulled off an elaborate escape from a South Texas prison in December 2000. The escape ultimately led to the Christmas Eve murder of Officer Aubrey Hawkins.
"Christmas Eve will never be the same," said Irving Police Lt. Jeff Spivey.
Officer Hawkins was shot 11 times in the parking lot of an Oshman's sporting goods store in Irving. Hawkins was ambushed while the escaped inmates were robbing the store. It would be nearly a month before police caught up with the killers in Woodland Park, Colorado.
"We are going down just to show support for Aubrey and the family," said Irving Police Sgt. John Mitchell. "As cliché as it sounds, it's the difference between good and evil."
As many as 30 Irving police officers are expected to make the trip for Rodriguez's execution. The 45-year-old death-row inmate waived his appeals in order to expedite his own death sentence.
Officer Hawkins' wife is also expected to be in Huntsville for Thursday's 6:00 p.m. execution.
