Sansom Park Police Writing 'Tickets For Tots'
Tickets Could Promote Holiday Spirit For North Texas Drivers Who Break Traffic Laws
SANSOM PARK, Texas (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Some might call them "Santas with Sirens." Instead of Rudolph's nose to the guide the way, they rely on old fashion red and blue lights.
"This is a low-income community. A lot of the kids are not going to have a Christmas at all," said Sansom Park Police Officer Daniel Martinez.
For the next month, when drivers are pulled over in Sansom Park, the ticket they get just might put them in the holiday spirit.
"Instead of giving a citation for speeding, we're handing out Tickets for Tots," said Officer Martinez. Depending on the violation, police may cut people a break
Along with speeding, Tammy Bird was driving with an expired license and she didn't have proof of insurance. Officer Martinez chose not to give her a citation. He hopes his good will, will inspire some of her own.
"I'll take 20 toys over if that's what it takes," Bird quipped.
The program is strictly voluntary. Drivers who get tickets don't have to buy a toy.
However, the average ticket in Sansom Park costs a driver about $165. When compared to a $10 toy, drivers say it's an easy choice.
Those who are pulled over are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to the Sansom Park Police Station. The toys will be handed out Christmas Day.
The Tickets for Tots program has been running for about a week and police already have quite a collection of toys for needy children.
Police say not everyone drops off a gift. But officers realize it only takes a few kind hearts to make a difference this holiday season.
