Investigation Into TMS Shooting Continues
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The woman hit by a stray bullet at the Texas Motor Speedway Sunday was discharged from the hospital Thursday night.
Police made a preliminary match to the gun after a Benbrook man came forward.
What's left is detective work to see if his story matches the bullet.
"Every bullet has a story to tell," said ballistics expert Richard Ernest.
Police are inspecting the .50 caliber bullet that hit Jill King inside her RV at the Texas Motor Speedway.
Jill's husband says the man who fired it told him it ricocheted off a berm - the dirt mound behind the target.
"If we're talking it bounced off a berm, then you're talking about soil material that may be imbedded in the surface of the bullet," said Ernest. "In many regards, it's oftentimes better than that. There's a lot more points of identification on a bullet that matches a particular gun."
The man who fired the .50 caliber bullet told the victim's husband he was shooting at a target 700 yards from where he was standing.
He also said the range he was at was located two and a half miles north of the Texas Motor Speedway.
Thursday afternoon, Chopper 11 found law officers at the scene possibly collecting evidence to match what some call the bullet's fingerprint.
