Man Shot & Killed After Garland-To-Dallas PD Chase

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― A Cockrell Hill man is dead following a shooting at the end of a chase with Garland Police.

The early morning chase went on Interstate 30 into Oak Cliff where the driver hit a tree.

Instead of giving up, the driver reportedly faced the Garland officers with a handgun.

Alicia Dominguez stands in her yard, where hours before a stranger was shot and killed by Garland Police.

"We heard 3 gunshots…maybe 3 or 4. We never really heard nothing, we never heard the cops say anything."

In the darkness, Antonio Alonzo had stacked his pickup truck into a tree in her family's yard. Garland police say that rather than give up, Alonzo confronted the officers trying to arrest him.

"There was an altercation and confrontation between he and the officers, the officers ended up having to fire their weapon, and he was killed here at the scene" says Garland Police spokesman Joe Harn.

Dominguez says there were many people at home, including children.  "That guy could've tried to do a lot of things, he could've tried to go in our house or, so, they might've made the right decision"

Antonio Alonzo is believed to be 27-years-old, though officers say he has given multiple addresses and birth dates in the past. His family declined to talk to CBS 11.

Though the chase started in Garland and Garland officers are involved, Dallas police are nonetheless conducting the investigation into the death because it occurred inside the city.

Investigators say Alonzo spent several years in prison and was currently a wanted man.

"Mr. Alonzo actually had a warrant for probation violation for aggravated robbery, we can't in his mind know if that's the reason why he didn't stop but we know he was wanted at this time" says Craig Miller with Dallas Police.

Dallas investigators will refer their findings to a grand jury.

The Garland police officers involved are on paid administrative leave, which the department says is routine in a police-related shooting.
