Texas Getting More Prosecutors On Border

BROWNSVILLE (AP) ― Texas is getting more than two dozen new federal prosecutors for border districts.

The Justice Department says the additional prosecutors are to help fight drug, human and weapons smuggling along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip announced the 64 new assistant U.S. attorney posts in four border states during a visit to Brownsville that included a stop at the port of entry. Filip said the additions will send the message that "ignoring the border just got a whole lot riskier."

Texas will get 29 new prosecutors, while Arizona will get 21 and California and New Mexico will each receive seven.

The Southern Judicial District, which stretches from Houston to Brownsville, will get 13 new prosecutors. The Western District, which extends from San Antonio and Laredo to El Paso, will get 16.
