Texas Job Seekers Shouldn't Take Holiday Break

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― In this tough economy, more and more people are finding themselves in the unemployment line.  In October, new unemployment claims in Tarrant County jumped from 10,000 to more than 12,000.

Some job seekers might be tempted to take a holiday break and resume job-hunting after the New Year, but that might be a mistake.

Job counselors say this is actually one of the best times of the year to look for a job.   The holiday season is the perfect time to make sure your résumé is updated and gets into the hands of hiring managers.

According to counselors, the end of the year is when companies finalize their budgets and want to identify potential new employees.

Texas Workforce Solutions is there to help job seekers.  The state agency not only helps people navigate their way through unemployment benefits, it also offers all kinds of free resources.

Job seekers can take advantage of computer and internet access, a phone bank to make job calls, fax and copy machines.

The agency even offers free seminars on things like creating the perfect résumé and interviewing skills.

Officials at Texas Workforce Solutions say they have seen a 20-25 percent increase in unemployment activity in Tarrant County over the last couple of months.

A supervisor at the office in North Richland Hills stresses that job seekers can't afford to take it easy during the holidays.

"This is one of the best times of the year to look for a job, because companies are winding down," explained John Kuznar with Workforce Solutions.  "They're finalizing budgets and they're looking to identify folks that they need to have on board and in place at the first of the year, so they don't spend the whole first quarter just trying to ramp up."

Kuznar had tons of other helpful information for job seekers. Check out the video WEB EXTRA.
