Retired Mansfield ISD Superintendent Dies In Crash

GEDDES, S.D. (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Former Mansfield ISD superintendent Vernon Newsom died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says Newsom, who retired from the Mansfield ISD in June, was riding a motorcycle in the southeastern part of the state when he crashed.

Newsom tried to pass a truck on a highway as the truck started to turn, according to South Dakota officials.  He steered into a ditch to avoid crashing into the truck, but his motorcycle rolled over and threw Newsom and his wife from the bike.

Newsom, 61, died at a local hospital, and his wife, Nadyne, is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, South Dakota officials say.

Newsom was regarded as a major reason for the Mansfield ISD's success during its rapid growth over the last decade.  The district's website says it is currently one of the fastest-growing districts in the state.

Newsom was hired as superintendent in 1996.  During his tenure, the district grew from one high school to four and opened 24 other school facilities.

District trustees recently voted to name Mansfield's 11,000-seat stadium after Newsom.
