Thieves Preying On Elderly Fort Worth Women
by Mark Johnson
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ―
A quick trip to Wal-Mart should be uneventful, but for at least two elderly Fort Worth women it was anything but usual.
Seventy-one-year-old Peggy, not her real name, had a few things to pick up Thursday afternoon at the Wal-Mart at 7451 McCart in south Fort Worth.
When she returned to her car, she knew something was wrong. She said what gave it away was "the way he was looking directly at me, watching my every move."
Moments later, the man grabbed her purse from inside her car before she could close the door.
"He reached over and grabbed the purse. He didn't say anything, just smiled at me," she said.
The man ran to a waiting car driven by a female and sped away from the store.
A similar incident happened Monday afternoon to another 71-year-old woman.
She told police she'd locked her purse into the child safety belt on the shopping cart and that kept the thief from getting away with it. There was a brief struggle, and the cart fell over, but the woman was not seriously hurt.
Again the man ran away and a woman driving a car picked him up.
Wal-Mart representatives say they are working closely with Fort Worth police in their investigation. They remind all shoppers that escorts are available at any time at any of their stores.
