Carrollton Police Warn Of An Officer Impersonator

CARROLLTON (CBS 11 News) ―
Carrollton police have issued a warning about a man posing as an officer.
Police say the victim was driving north on I-35 at 2 a.m. when a white SUV pulled up behind him.
Carrollton police described the vehicle as having red and blue flashing lights and the logo "CG" on the front passenger door. Police speculate the SUV was a Chevy Tahoe.
The man inside the vehicle was wearing a black t-shirt with the word "police" across the chest, say police.
Here's what police say happened: As the victim pulled onto Whitlock Road, the SUV pulled in front of him and forced him to stop. The police impersonator asked the victim for his driver's license. When the victim took out his wallet, the police impersonator snatched it from his hands. He then told the victim to pull onto a side street, and when the victim complied, the thief took off with his wallet.
Police say there were several signs that the man was not an officer.
"In Carrollton, we're going to drive marked police vehicles in general for a routine traffic stop," said Carrollton Police Sergeant John Singleton. "Our officers are not going to pull someone off, block them in and force them to stop."
Officer Singleton added that a real police officer should only take your driver's license and insurance card, not your entire wallet.
Police advise if a pedestrian is ever stopped by a suspicious vehicle, the person should call 911 and confirm that the squad car is legitimate.
While this could be an isolated incident, Police are worried it might be the beginning of a trend.
