Science Teacher Goes From 'Hands On' To 'On Deck'

WATAUGA (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Julie Pollard has always been a hands on science teacher. Now, she's a hands on deck science teacher. For the next eight weeks, Pollard will be teaching her Watauga middle school classes -via satellite- from a research ship 10 thousand miles away.

Pollard was selected in a nationwide search as the Educator at Sea aboard the JOIDES Resolution. The research ship is taking core samples of the earth, some a mile long, off the coast of New Zealand. Pollard says, it was the chance to show her students what science is like in the real world.

Pollard used a webcam to take her students on a tour of the ship today.
At this point, her students seem happy just to see her. Angelica Gasca said, "It was good to see her because we really miss her."

Pollard is also taking this out of the box teaching opportunity and broadcasting it to classrooms across the nation. And, a videoconference is already set up for France.

It gives many other students the opportunity to learn from this North Texas science teacher who compares herself to the earth element copper.

"Dependable. We use it daily. Looks pretty when cleaned up. But can look
scruffy too!" Pollard joked.

Pollard is keeping a blog at JOIDESResolution.org. She's inviting students everywhere to send her a message or questions. The JOIDES Resolution is also on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
