Mavs Sign Free Agent Diop, Resign Barea

DALLAS (AP) ― The Dallas Mavericks announced that they have signed free agent center DeSagana Diop and re-signed guard J.J. Barea.

Diop rejoins the Mavericks for a second time after being traded away to the New Jersey Nets last February in the deal that brought Jason Kidd to Dallas.

"We are extremely excited to welcome Gana back into the Mavericks family," President of Basketball Operations/General Manager Donnie Nelson said in a statement.

"At the age of 26, he is a young center in his prime that also possesses significant playoff experience. He was a big part of our Finals run with his ability to defend, block shots and rebound. We are pleased to regain is presence both in the paint and in the locker room."

Barea has played 44 games for the Mavericks, including 9 starts, during his two seasons in Dallas.

In a statement, Donnie Nelson said "J.J. has worked extremely hard and has developed into a fine young NBA point guard. We are pleased to reward his efforts and look forward to his bright future in a Mavs uniform."
