Mav Josh Howard Arrested In North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Dallas Maverick Josh Howard was arrested in North Carolina last night.

According to police the Dallas forward was charged with Speed Competition, Reckless Driving and Speeding.

The incident reportedly happened in Winston-Salem at 10:43 pm CST Thursday night.

According to a police report an officer observed two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicles involved were a black Lexus and silver Volkswagen. The officer stopped the black Lexus and the driver was identified as Howard.

Sgt. David Collins of the Winston-Salem Police Department confirms that Howard was clocked doing 94 mph in a 55 mph zone. There is no dashcam video from the police car.

Howard, who has been released, reportedly did not take a mug shot because he gave a written promise to return to North Carolina and appear in court on September 23, 2008.

The 28-year-old was a first round draft pick for the Mavericks in 2003. He made the NBA All-Star team in 2007.

In April, Howard went on a syndicated radio talk show and spoke about his fondness for marijuana.

"Most of the players in the league use marijuana and I have and do partake in smoking weed in the off-season sometimes," Howard told The Michael Irvin Show on the local ESPN affiliate. "I mean, that's my personal choice and my personal opinion, but I don't think that's stopping me from doing my job."

Later Howard apologized "to my organization and all my fans" for all the fuss his comments created.

Last year Howard was suspended by the NBA for the first two regular-season games after shoving Sacramento center Brad Miller during a game.

Howard is in the second year of a $40 million, five-year contract that keeps him through 2010-11.
