Mavs Announce Rick Carlisle As Head Coach

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

After a week of speculation, the Dallas Mavericks announced the hiring of Rick Carlisle as head coach on Saturday.

Carlisle becomes the ninth coach in Mavericks history.

The team, however, did not release any terms of the deal, but sources said it is a four-year deal that totals about $17.5 million, which is slightly less than what former coach Avery Johnson made.

"We are happy and proud to welcome Rick Carlisle into the Maverick family," President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson said in an email release.

"He was our top choice from the onset. His integrity, exceptional basketball IQ and balanced approach are exactly what we were looking for. Rick's playoff experience and success make him a great fit for our team and its future."

During the past six years, Carlisle has been head coach in Detroit and Indiana and has a career record of 281-211 (.571).

Carlisle 's teams have made five postseason appearances, including two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Mavs fired Johnson on April 30.

A formal news conference to announce the deal  is expected on Wednesday.
