Viewer Review: "Rip: A Remix Manifesto"

Suzie Reid
DALLAS Everyone recognizes songs from the Jackson 5 or the Beatles, but if you mix two of their songs, a term called "mashing," who then owns and is the creator of this new song or collection of beats?

The movie "Rip: A Remix Manifesto" explores the idea of who owns art and toys with the theory of Intellectual Property and how far can a person or corporation go to "own" a concept, group of music notes or images and to what cost?

Brett Gaylor directs and narrates the film and encourages the viewer to ask important questions of themselves in regards to copyright laws, international relations and whether "Big Brother" is really a big bully to our global neighbors.

I found this film intellectually stimulating, creatively formed and was supported the entire time with excerpts from the mash-up musician Girl Talk. And if you have ever burned a copy of a CD or DVD off the internet or a friend and not paid for it, then you are already a part of this film. I highly recommend you check it out.
