An FAA communication device failure at Dallas-Fort Worth International airport caused air traffic delays early Monday morning that cascaded to East and West Coast cities, reported CBS station KTVT-TV in Dallas.
Radio communications used by two DFW airport radio towers were restored after the unexplained failure of devices known as a voice switch, according to the FAA.
The voice switch allows airport traffic controllers to communicate with the Fort Worth Center's regional traffic controllers, who are responsible for an area that extends out to south Texas, west Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma.
The failure prevented regional controllers and DFW airport controllers from handing off flights to each other.
Officials at DFW Airport are continuing to monitor the situation. In the meantime, some departing flights have been delayed by at least an hour. Arriving flights are delayed about 90 minutes.
This all comes just as the busy holiday travel week gets underway, with crowds heading to the airport on Thanksgiving vacation.
