Severely Beaten Man Charged With Faking Robbery

GARDNER, Mass. (CBS) ― A Maryland gas station attendant who was severely beaten in a robbery has been arrested for staging the entire incident. Along with his new criminal record, Erik Teong now has permanent eye damage and he could be charged with insurance fraud.

Teong, 29, of Gardner, Mass., called 911 on Oct. 28 after he claimed he was robbed while on his way to deposit $7,000 from the Shell gas station where he was working that night.

Police said he was beaten so badly he needed two corrective surgeries. As a result, Teong filed a workman's compensation claim.

But, it turns out he allegedly kept the robbery money for himself and his accomplice.

On Wednesday, four months after the robbery, police arrested Teong and charged him with larceny over $250 and false report of a crime.

They say Teong admitted that he talked a friend into giving him a hard punch to the face to fool police into believing that a robbery had taken place.

Police say the friend, who has not been identified, will be summoned to court to face a single charge of false report of a crime.

Because he filed the workman's compensation claim, Teong is also being investigated by the Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts.
