Reuters has evacuated its New York City newsroom after an editor opened an envelope containing an unidentified white powder.
New York City police ordered the evacuation of 140 staffers from the news service's newsroom at about 12:45 p.m. Monday. Staffers were allowed to return to the newsroom just after 4 p.m.
Thomson Reuters spokeswoman Jolie Hunt says that Brian Rhoads, the company's managing editor for the Americas, opened the envelope and a "puff of powder" came out of it. Police isolated Rhoads and the envelope and evacuated the newsroom.
The New York Times evacuated its newsroom last week after an employee opened an envelope containing a powder. That substance was not believed to be dangerous.
