READING, Pa. (AP) ― Emergency workers in northeastern Pennsylvania say severe thunderstorms toppled scores of trees that destroyed two homes and damaged 40 more.

Officials say no one was injured in the storms, which brought golf ball-sized hail to Berks County's Amity Township on Friday evening. Utility workers say power lines and utility poles fell across the county, knocking out electricity to about 2,800 homes and businesses.

Brian Gottschall, the county deputy director for emergency services, says some people thought a small tornado hit the township, but forecasters reported no tornado activity.

Emergency dispatchers in Lackawanna County also received numerous reports of trees and wires on roads, but there have been no reports of injuries or serious structural damage.

PPL Electric Utilities reported 7,500 customers without power in Lackawanna County at the height of the storm.
