Gay rights activists from coast to coast are hitting the streets for gay pride parades.
In New York, Fifth Avenue has been flooded with marchers marking the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall uprisings. A raid on the gay-friendly Stonewall Inn was the starting point for riots that lasted several days in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. The event became a defining moment for the gay rights movement.
Gov. David Paterson is turning out for the parade and says he's hopeful the state will pass legislation legalizing same-sex marriage.
In Chicago, Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Sen. Roland Burris and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan are turning out for the festivities that have attracted hundreds of thousands in recent years.
And San Francisco holds its annual parade today. The celebrations may be more muted than last year, which were held after same-sex marriage was legalized in California. Proposition 8 stripped gay couples of that ability.
