Companies laid off more than 68,000 workers across the country Monday. They include 7,000 workers at Home Depot, about 8,000 at Sprint and even 100 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
The "Pink Slip Pandemic" is hitting a little too close to home for some.
"My co-worker's daughter just got laid off today. Last week they told her she was safe. She's been at this company for nine years and today she has no job," said Rachel Filippi.
"You just have to hope that the next round isn't you or anyone else for that matter," said Jeff Lorenzen.
Michele Jiosne works for Doherty Employer Services and lately she has seen far too many employers making tough decisions. So she suggests throwing out the "out of site, out of mind" approach of avoiding your boss that many people take, and create some time for them to get to know you by bringing ideas to the table.
"So coming in with your ideas, maybe a cost-savings opportunity would be an example of creating more valuable face time with your manager," said Jiosne.
Besides being visible, Jiosne suggests going "above and beyond" by volunteering for assignments and helping co-workers. She also stands by the old adage- "come early, stay late."
Even by doing all of this, Jiosne still can't completely guarantee job security.
"One of my philosophies is that everything happens for a reason. You may not realize it today, but something better will be coming down the road for you," said Jiosne.
Other tips for job-proofing include networking non-stop and not burning bridges.
Even when you have a job, Jiosne said you should keep in touch with past employers because you just never know.
