Watchdog Group Outraged By Retro Starbucks Logo

Man Urges Boycott Over Racy Mermaid

SACRAMENTO (CBS) ― Some say the lady on the new Starbucks logo is too risqué to take on the go. But is it really grounds for outrage?

Starbucks is trying to get back to its roots. And part of that involves bringing back its original logo.

Mark Dice, founder of a watchdog group called The Resistance, is calling for a boycott against Starbucks for what he says is a too-racy illustration, reports CBS station KOVR-TV in Sacramento.

"We want to send a message to Starbucks that they can't put a half-naked, half-mermaid-type figure with her fins, or her quote unquote legs, spread open like a prostitute," Dice says.

This new image is based on a slightly cleaned-up version of Starbucks' original logo. In response to the boycott, Starbucks released a written statement today saying in part:

"Bringing back an updated version of the original logo is a way to celebrate our heritage and bring a little piece of Seattle to our stores across the country. We chose to slightly alter our original logo based on customer feedback received during our 35th anniversary promotion."
