Cleburne Man Stung By Bees More Than 100 Times

By Selena Hernandez
CLEBURNE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― An 83-year-old Cleburne man is in critical condition after he was stung more than 100 times by a swarm of bees.

Cleburne Fire Chief Clint Ishmael told CBS 11 News that Kenneth Dumas was mowing his lawn Monday afternoon in the 1100 block of Chambers.

The chief believes the sound of the lawnmower sent the bees to go into attack mode.

The bees actually belonged to Dumas. He kept a hive on his property to harvest honey.

Two Emergency Medical Service crews and three firefighters were also attacked when they tried to come to Dumas' aide.

"Then the police came and blocked off Stroud Street and they said just go inside, bring your animals inside," neighbor Bill Conover said of the event. "

The fire department hosed Dumas and the ambulance workers with foam and got them away from the scene.

Residents in 10 homes nearby were asked to 'shelter in place' until the situation was resolved.

Fire crews eventually destroyed the hive. The injured emergency workers are okay.
