Fort Worth To Consider Law Against Tethering Dogs

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Tuesday morning the Fort Worth Health Department is expected to make a proposal to city council members, asking them to ban the tethering of dogs.

The city's current ordinance contradicts the state law on tethering dogs.

The Fort Worth ordinance says if a dog is tethered, it has to be behind a fence. State law prohibits chaining dogs overnight or within 500 feet of a school.

The health department hopes Tuesday's recommendation will make the law on chaining dogs less confusing and easier to enforce.

The earliest the council would vote on the proposal would be Tuesday, January 22. If passed, the health department would then work on educating the public on the stricter rules. Violators could face fines of up to $2,000.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
