FWPD & Animal Control Team Up To Save Trapped Dog

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Thursday morning a Fort Worth animal control officer acted quickly to rescue a trapped black Labrador retriever.

A police officer heard the dog barking and tracked the sound to a storm drain. He found the dog trapped in the drain.

The animal control officer arrived to assess the situation and used food to keep the dog near the manhole opening.

According to a CBS 11 News crew, it took about five minutes for the officer to use some rope, get it around the dog and lift him to safety.

"Today worked out as perfect as you could get when an animal goes down a storm drain," said Fort Worth Animal Control Manager Keane Menefee.

The rescue took place around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, just hours before heavy showers pelted the area. The officers were concerned water would fill the storm drain.

Nearby business workers noticed the commotion. Beverly Soders was one of them hoping for a happy outcome. "I'm so glad they got that little baby out of there," she said.

The black lab is estimated to be six months old. The male dog was taken to the Fort Worth Animal Control Center for evaluation. The manager says the dog has a slight injury to a front paw and is severely malnourished.

"I think today with the storm we had and the condition she's in, Lucky would be a good name," Menefee suggested.

The dog was wearing a collar, but there were no tags on it. Menefee says the black lab was not micro-chipped. Animal control workers hope to find the dog's owner. If that doesn't happen, the dog is likely to be put up for adoption.
